Water Island is located ½ mile south of St Thomas, in Charlotte Amalie Bay. There is a regular ten minute ferry ride service from Phillips Landing on Water Island to Charlotte Amalie on Saint Thomas. The island consists of 491.5 acres (1.989 km2) with a population of approximately 180. There’s an eco-campground (Virgin Island Campground), a small Guest House, and its eastern third is Sprat Bay Estates, a gated community.
Sites of interest include plantation ruins, Fort Segarra (an underground fort partially constructed by the U.S. during World War II), and Supermarket Reef (a scuba diving site in Limestone Bay). The island is very picturesque, and has been used a number of times as a film location. Scenes from “A Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons” were recently filmed on Honeymoon Beach. Tourists visiting the U.S.V.I and locals alike visit the island for hiking, surfing, cycling, scuba-diving, wedding (and other) parties on the beaches.
A new luxury, low-density Hotel and Marina Complex on Water Island, whose amenities and tourism dollars will positively benefit the entire USVI, is in the final planning stages, having received government approval in 2014. The Government’s declared ambition is to rival Mustique, known to the famous as the most exclusive publicly owned island in the whole of the Caribbean.
